While this work is not therapy, to some participants, these inner-directed practices can feel therapeutic and healing. Others, especially children (but not limited to the little ones!) simply enjoy the experience of spontaneous creation and freedom to play. Still others benefit from the tools and activities in this class to break through blocks or as a means to engage and integrate themselves more deeply into certain areas of their lives.
Some workshops will involve participants working in small groups and sharing their experiences within the work. In these moments, personal feelings and revelations may be shared. These are perfect moments, providing the cathartic experience of performance - to witness and to be witnessed. Many participants have shared that they leave feeling invigorated, free and open, inspired and deeply connected to the participants of the group.
As facilitator, I integrate my training in counseling, drama therapy, teaching, expressive arts therapy, movement, acting and directing into each session where, and when appropriate. My training as a therapist is inherently part of my thought process so I do make decisions about the course of each session based on the present needs of the participants as well as to safely lead and hold the space for each individual. Unlike traditional therapy, these sessions do not include any psychoanalysis, diagnosis or assessment.
Individual sessions do allow space for brief support and counseling. The majority of these one-on-one sessions include the participant engaged in several activities chosen specifically to meet their needs. There will be space to talk but the main focus will be on the art being the catalyst for healing and understanding.
